Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, and Facebook

GOP candidates Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich just finished up a hard fought battle in Florida last night, and it looks like Mitt Romney took the state. The 2012 GOP Primaries have been particularly tech-savvy, with candidates asking volunteers to set-up web sites, update Facebook and Twitter statuses, and acquire friends and followers on multiple social networks. We have seen harsh tweets against Romney from Newt Gingrich and very direct statements condemning Gingrich from Mitt Romney. The 2012 GOP Primaries are giving us a preview of modern elections in a post-social media era. The 2012 primaries also provide a few key concepts to building and leveraging a social media following.

Facebook
In the 2012 Primaries, Facebook is Mitt Romney’s game. Boasting his love for Indiana Jones, Sienfeld, Roy Orbison, and Ender’s Game, Romney has built a 1.4 million person Facebook following that is passionate about a Mitt Romney presidential election.

Effective Facebook pages are interactive. They do not just spew facts like a fountain; rather they involve fans with questions, polls, and photos. Your company’s Facebook page ought to include branding that is consistent with your website and any customer-facing company materials. Most importantly, issue calls to action through Facebook. If the only purpose for your company’s social media presence is to get followers, then you are going to fail. Facebook is a means and it is not an end, so learn to convert your Facebook presence into leads and sales.

Twitter
With 1.4 million followers, Newt Gingrich rules the Twitter war with constant updates and by connecting with powerful Twitter influencers.

You can build a powerful Twitter presence by providing consistent quality content. Successful tweeters understand that they win by sharing great ideas, quotes, posts, and deals daily. One of the biggest traps Twitter users fall into is burning out in the first few weeks on Twitter. You do not have to be involved in every conversation in every industry. Sustain your Twitter presence over the long term by sticking with daily niche interactions. Like Newt Gingrich, you can use other Twitter power players to get your name out there. Develop relationships with important Twitter users in your industry, and then tap into their network.

This all begs the question, according to the social media data, who is going to win? Will the candidate with the most Facebook followers walk out with the nomination? Is Twitter going to decide the race?

This leads to my final point about social media’s impact on your company. While networks like Facebook and Twitter are important and powerful tools, they are nothing more than tools. You cannot depend on thousands of Twitter followers to lead you to business success; you have to make your social media following work for you. The winning company is not the one with the most followers, but it is the one with the most business. Voters, and not the social media, will decide the winning GOP candidate. Likewise, actual sales and profits will decide your company’s success, not your popularity on Facebook.
